About the project
What is AMASAMYA?
AMASAMYA is a free tool that checks websites, documents, and apps for problems that stop blind and low-vision people from using them. You can use it two ways: as an add-on for Chrome, Edge, or Firefox that checks whatever page you are looking at, or as a website you sign into that checks pages, files, and apps in your browser.
Who made it and why?
Akhilesh Malani, a blind engineer in Chennai who has been using a screen reader every day for over 16 years. Most accessibility tools on the market work fine if you can see. Very few of them are actually usable by the blind engineers, designers, and testers those tools are supposed to help. AMASAMYA exists because Akhilesh could not find a tool he could use on his own without asking a sighted colleague to read the results to him. There is more on the About Akhilesh page.
What does "made to be used by blind people" actually mean?
Three concrete things. One, everything in AMASAMYA works with a keyboard and a screen reader from start to finish. No mouse needed. Two, results are shown as plain lists and tables, not as highlights drawn over the page you are checking. Highlights only help if you can see them. Three, every new version is tested with a screen reader before it ships. Not as a last check, as the main check.
Cost and licensing
Is AMASAMYA free?
Yes. The browser add-on is free on the Chrome, Edge, and Firefox stores. The website is free to sign into and free to use.
Will it stay free?
Yes for the browser add-on, always. For the website, the plan is that everything you can do today stays free. If a paid version ever comes along, it will be new things stacked on top (team accounts, connections to your bug tracker, longer history), not a lock on things that used to be free.
Can I use it for paid client work?
Yes. Use AMASAMYA to check your clients' sites and hand them the report. Charge for your time. The source code is public if you want to build it into your own team's workflow.
What AMASAMYA checks (and does not)
How much of the standard does it cover?
AMASAMYA runs 25 automated checks against the international web accessibility standard (called WCAG 2.2), covering the two most-required levels (A and AA). You can also run it across a whole website in one go, up to 200 pages at a time. No automated tool covers the full standard by itself, because some checks need a human to look at the page. The known limitations page has an honest list of what AMASAMYA cannot catch on its own.
Does it work on anything besides web pages?
Yes. Upload a PDF or a Word/Excel/PowerPoint file and it checks the document. Follow the mobile checklist to check an iPhone or Android app. The browser add-on itself only checks websites.
Does AMASAMYA fix problems for me automatically?
No, and that is on purpose. AMASAMYA tells you what is broken and how to fix it in your code. It does not touch the page you are checking. There are "one-line-of-code" widgets sold as accessibility fixers; they do not actually work, and the accessibility community has been clear about that for years. AMASAMYA is the opposite of one of those.
Data and privacy
Where does my data go?
Checks you run in the browser add-on stay on your own computer and disappear when you close the browser. If you sign into the website, your saved history is kept in your account (hosted on Google's Firebase). Nobody at AMASAMYA sees what you check.
Do you sell or share my data?
No. AMASAMYA does not sell, rent, or share any user data. Ever. The one time anything leaves your computer is if you turn on the optional AI helpers, which send screenshots to the AI service you picked (OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google) using your own key. Full details on the privacy page.
Do I need to sign in to use the browser add-on?
No. Install it and use it. No account needed. Signing in only applies to the website version, and only so it can remember your checks across devices.
How AMASAMYA compares to other tools
How is AMASAMYA different from other accessibility tools?
Most accessibility tools (axe, WAVE, Lighthouse, and others) are trusted and useful. What AMASAMYA does that the others do not: it works cleanly with a screen reader from start to finish, so a blind engineer can use it without help; it also watches what happens when someone tries to use the page with a keyboard, so it catches broken menus and dead-end pages that pure code-checkers miss; and it is fully free and open source. If you already use another tool, use AMASAMYA alongside it. Different tools catch different things.
Should I use AMASAMYA instead of the tool I already have?
Use both. Every tool catches things others miss. AMASAMYA is honest about what it does not find, so it is designed to sit next to another tool, not to replace it.
Getting help
How do I report a bug or ask for a feature?
Use the feedback page on this site, or open an issue at github.com/AMASAMYA/AMASAMYA. AMASAMYA is made by one person in his spare time, so a reply might not be instant. Every message is read.
